Absolutely a beautiful work of music from the French black/ambient band, Alcest. The frontman, Neige, went on to join forces with Drudkh, and a few other bands to form the post-rock group "Old Silver Key."
Great track to just sit back and enjoy in the autumn's fading light.

Hel - Fimbulwinter
Very raw song from a great German black metal group. I don't know a whole lot about them, except their recordings are always mastered wonderfully; this song is a fine example of their craftsmanship musically - they lay out a great atmosphere with the subtle synth and wide-feeling sections.

Wodensthrone - Heofungtid
Wodensthrone - Heofungtid
This phenomenal band from the U.K. is in cahoots with the band "Winterfylleth," who I will link another day.
I was immediately drawn to this band, namely this song, and couldn't stop listening to it - over and over. So masterfully composed and arranged, especially the "vast" and sort of "spacy" sounding portions found at 1:27 and then repeated throughout - brings the smell of damp, dead leaves in a midforest clearing to mind, maybe at a full moon night, with the sound of only a nearby river rushing in its age-old, never ending cycle. When I'm out mushroom hunting and roaming in the woods near my home (Piers Gorge, seen here, only I go about 2-3 miles off the path into the forest - I know the deer trails well), this song always comes to mind when I stop for a moment to drink and have a look at the surroundings; the song has a haunting effect with its thick atmosphere.
Many bands have great songs, and oftentimes, the album the aforementioned "great song" is featured on is just okay, or even "meh." I can assure you, the entire almost 70 minute album is very engrossing - there are no times when you feel as though you detach from the songs and jump back to reality.
Interesting fact: this album was recorded in the "in house" studio used by the renowned band "Negura Bunget."

Empyrium - The Blue Mists of Night
A beautiful, sorrowful and powerful piece from the German group "Empyrium." When I get new music, I always buy a single song from a band first, and if I like it, I usually buy the rest of the album (iTunes has a VERY surprisingly diverse selection among folk metal!). Generally, I buy a $25 iTunes card and will pick up about 15-20 songs from NEW bands I have yet to hear, and a few from bands I liked and wanted to hear more from...This song from Empyrium REALLY caught my ear!

Drudkh - The First Snow
Drudkh - The First Snow
One of my absolute favorite bands, Drudkh is a powerhouse, recording-wise, releasing one album EVERY year for almost a decade. Drudkh is this mysterious, shadowed figure in the already fairly hidden genre that is folk metal (and its sub-genres), never playing a single show, scarcely doing interviews and almost never doing photos.
This song rerolls through my head every winter day...it is hauntingly beautiful, so simple, and listening to it floods my mind with thoughts of winter in its boundless energy - I have always loved winter the most, ever since I can remember.
More specifically, I think of the day I asked my fiancee, Erin, to marry me. December 17, 2011, I brought her to Copper Harbor, Michigan (Seen here,) the furthest point north in Michigan - VERY remote, and (as I hoped) it was dumping snow all that day; the first real snow we had received that year.
We stopped along the way a few places, as I had made it a scavenger hunt leading to Copper Harbor and me "popping the question..." We stopped at this one point, about 20 minutes south of there. Lake Superior was still unfrozen and lapping on the shore down on one side of the road, down a huge ravine, and the other side of the road had a ENORMOUS dune - almost 100 meters tall, but sloped so it was long and climbable.
We got out and climbed this dune, and the snow was coming down...silent, en mass, and only the sound was that of the lake crashing a quarter mile behind us - still in sight. When we reached the top of the dune, it dropped off at a direct angle; and drop off that would kill anyone who overstepped.
The top of the dune looked out over a gigantic pine forest, its trees coated with fresh snow, and more coming down.
I remember that entire moment to every detail, as I told myself in my soul that that was the single most perfect, most beautiful moment in my entire life, as I stood holding Erin's hand. I still remember it perfectly, and every time I do, this song, Drudkh's "the First Snow," is running in my head.
It's funny; folk metal has a great deal of beauty tucked within its harsh shell - I will be posting many a song like this one.

Moonsorrow - Raunioilla
I will begin with one of my absolute favorites - Moonsorrow.
I cannot express the feelings I hold deep within for this band; their music is truly a gatekeeper letting the scribe of my soul and heart into the glory of my mindscapes - absolutely pure beauty. According to iTunes, I have listened to this song almost 400 times...at 13:37 a go, that's close to 5500 minutes worht of listening.
This song really draws out an immense, rainy landscape for my mind; a cold, neigh-winter shore overlooking the Baltic sea somewhere in northwestern Finland, long ago. I can practically feel the grime of the seaspray on my leathery skin as the cold winter brings its storms and onslaught yet another year.
But, of course, it's just a song! That's what I can see in my mind when I hear it. The lyrics (Raunioilla Lyrics) show immense depth, and despite the length of the song, it truly never fades in beauty, like a dear loved one aging - I feel the same every listening, and only can sigh in awe.
I will be posting much of Moonsorrow's vast works in the future; such a talented band is not easily overlooked, especially in the enormous, multicontinental works that lay within the genre of folk metal!
